As Lead for Kent Mindful Employer we aim to increase awareness of staff wellbeing (especially mental wellbeing)  and provide support for businesses in recruiting and retaining staff as well as training and workshops

As part of the Mindful Employer initiaitve, Lynn has designed some programmes to help businesses and individuals remain resilient and aware, thereby improving sustainability.

Lynn is currently engaged with the national Workplace Wellbeing Charter, working with Kent County Council and Public Health, preparing for the Public Health England agenda.  There are two national indicators for local authorities to measure against in the workplace, and building the supporting  landscape for businesses, especially small to medium businesses, to help them engage in the wellbeing aspirations, is Lynn's specialty.

TESTIMONIALS

1. I first met Lynn Marchant, two years ago, when I was having difficulties at work. She came highly recomended by MIND.  I was on the verge of a second breakdown, Lynn supported me, along side a Union Rep, in Regular meetings. She was very supportive and left no stone unturned. She gave me the confidence to carry on working and I even passed my NVQ Exam. With this new found self esteem, I am able to face new challenges in my career.

2. A small town restaurant, whose front of house member of staff had become unwell.  The manager was unsure how to speak with the person as their behaviour was having an effect on customers and other staff.  Lynn and the manager agreed a plan of conversation with the individual, put in a wellness in work plan that built confidence in the management of a change of medication for the individual which had caused the issues.  The wellness in work plan allowed for a continuing conversation that both felt comfortable with, and gave responsibility to each, both the employee and the employer.

3. My first meeting with Lynn was in July 2011 at a conference on peer support in mental health. I already knew Lynn's name from hearing about Kent Mindful Employer, she had an excellent reputation within the mental health trust and vast experience of working with local employers. From talking to Lynn at this event, it was clear that she was passionate about work for people with mental health issues including increasing opportunities for those who may want to become formal peer support workers.

I have kept in touch with Lynn ever since then and feel fortunate that she extended that invitation. Lynn has been a very supportive and helpful contact during my first year of working for a mainstream employer. I know that Lynn produces many original resources for employee and employers, all of these materials are creative, thought provoking and practical. One of the first emails she sent me contained the line manager's handbook. Lynn has real experience of supporting people with serious mental health issues into work and has assisted many success stories. I would recommend that other people - from all fields of health, business, and employment - utilise Lynn's expertise and Kent Mindful Employer network

4. Setting up a training programme of mental health awareness and positive pressure management to a public sector department that was having issues around 'stress', but where real health conditions were the issue that were not being able to be spoken about.  The wider context of workplace wellbeing and mental health allowed a dialogue that previously had not been open.

What is Kent Mindful Employer?

Health Work and Wellbeing enables us to speak about mental wellbeing.  Led and supported by employers for employers, the MINDFUL EMPLOYER® initiative is aimed at increasing awareness of mental health at work and providing support for businesses in recruiting and retaining staff.

Stress, depression and anxiety are estimated to be the cause of more working days lost than any other work-related illness. Sick pay reduces profits. Covering absent workers adds more pressure. Loss of valued and talented people costs more than money.
